Approaching my 70th birthday seemed a good time to look back and see what lessons if any I gained from the past decade. Here are a few. I would be interested to hear any you have gained recently as well.

You can store ripe avocados in the fridge.

“I am a wimp” and “I’m just getting older” belong at the bottom of the differential diagnosis. I wasn’t getting older when I had trouble climbing the hills: I had anemia. I wasn’t a wimp when I was out of breath: I had asthma. There are often good medical treatments for things that aren’t wimpiness or age. Sometimes something that could not be treated the first time has gained a new treatment on a later visit.

Tall Papa was right. A brisk knock of the egg to the counter is as good a way to break an egg as any other.

Twist in opposite directions when you are opening a screw top. You will suddenly be twice as strong.

Reconciliation is often possible, even after years. What is rebuilt is sometimes better than what was lost.
